Regenerative heat

Heating currently accounts for more than half of final energy consumption in Germany. And existing heat supply is almost entirely reliant on burning fossil fuels.

Transitioning the heating sector could prove instrumental in North Rhine-Westphalia reaching its energy and climate protection targets. A range of technology is already available to cover future heating needs with regenerative heat. Expanding “green” heating networks is central to the State’s strategy for climate-neutral energy supply in North Rhine-Westphalia. And for that to happen, existing heating networks must be expanded. Regenerative heat sources such as geothermal energy, mine water and solar thermal energy will also become increasingly important to heat supply, as will seasonal thermal energy stores. Fuel-based power and heat plants using green hydrogen, biomass or power-to-heat technologies such as CHP (combined heat and power) and heat pumps will, however, continue to play an important role in ensuring a reliable supply of energy.
