NRW.Energy4Climate presents selected research and application projects from North Rhine-Westphalia that are helping the industrial sector make the transition towards climate neutrality. Read on for an overview of outstanding projects that are already being implemented by actors from a wide range of industries.

Kabel ZERO

The aim of the "Kabel ZERO" project is to develop climate-friendly steam generation for use in the particularly energy-intensive drying processes of the paper industry. In Hagen, energy based on geothermal energy is to be used for paper drying in the future.

ChemCycling by BASF

Producing new products from chemically recycled plastic waste for applications that have high demands on efficiency, quality and hygiene is the goal of BASF's ChemCycling project. Here, plastic waste is converted into a secondary raw material so that the use of fossil raw materials is reduced.

ALIGN-CCUS & TAKE-OFF

Using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a raw material and thus avoiding CO2 emissions is the core idea of the "ALIGN-CCUS" and "TAKE-OFF" projects. While the aim of the ALIGN-CCUS pilot project, which was completed in November 2020, was to produce dimethyl ether, or DME for short, from captured CO2, electricity and water, the follow-up project TAKE-OFF has been going one step further since 2021: DME is to be used to efficiently produce jet fuel in a further process step.

CLEANKER

Safely capturing process-related CO2 quantities and making them usable - that is the goal of the European CLEANKER project, in which the Verein Deutscher Zementwerke e. V. (VDZ) and its research institution VDZ Technology gGmbH are involved. 13 partners, including universities, companies and NGOs, are working in an Italian test facility with the help of the integrated calcium looping process to create the basis for making cement production more climate-friendly.

FAQ

Who is NRW.Energy4Climate? What does this new state agency do? And why was it set up in the first place? Find the answers to FAQs here.

Who is NRW.Energy4Climate?

NRW.Energy4Climate is the new state agency for climate protection and energy transition in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Our aim is to be a key driving force behind efforts to implement the energy transition and meet climate targets in NRW, while simultaneously strengthening the state as a location for industry and services. We are focusing on the four highest emitting sectors – energy, industry, heat and buildings, and mobility – which together are responsible for more than 90 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in NRW.

What functions does NRW.Energy4Climate fulfil?

The transition has already been fully under way in our state for some time – in municipalities, industry and the energy sector, and with the involvement of businesses and citizens. The focus now is on accelerating this transformation so North Rhine-Westphalia can achieve the goal of climate neutrality as quickly as possible. We are here to assist all sectors and are the first point of contact when it comes to pushing climate protection projects forward. The support we provide ranges from providing planning tools to offering consulting and workshops through to making specific information available, for instance regarding funding programmes and technical topics.

Why was NRW.Energy4Climate established?

NRW is aiming to be climate neutral by 2045 at the latest. Industry plays a decisive role in our state, so the conversion to climate neutrality calls for a special effort. To help us overcome this challenge, the state set up NRW.Energy4Climate to create a new structure for supporting the implementation of measures around climate protection and the energy transition going forward. The goal is to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously strengthening North Rhine-Westphalia as a location for industry and services in the future.

Where is NRW.Energy4Climate located?

The new state agency has its head office in Düsseldorf. Because physical proximity is the key to close, effective collaboration, NRW will also have its own contacts in the regions so we can support actors on the ground.

How can I get in touch with the agency?

You can contact us from Monday to Thursday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. by ringing  +49.211.822086-555 or by email.
